How To Choose A Snowboard Bag
Travelling to the mountains can be a stressful business at the best of times. Traffic, airport crowds, weight limits, hand luggage checks… Throw in extra hassles thanks to a global pandemic and the last thing you need when you finally arrive is to discover your board got damaged by a rogue baggage handler.
The right snowboard bag will keep your stick well protected and help you organise your shit so the journey goes smoother. Here are some of the key features to look out for:
-
Style
There are two basic styles of snowboard bag: wheeled (aka roller) bags and non-wheeled board sacks.
If you live near the mountains or maybe an indoor slope, a lightweight non-wheeled bag is all you need for short trips. Carry it over your shoulder, sling it in the car and away you go.
For longer journeys where you’re likely lugging a lot of gear – and especially if you’re taking a flight and might need to haul it through the airport terminal – a snowboard bag with wheels is the way to go. Just be prepared for the inevitable joke from bus and taxi drivers who’ve never been to the mountains in their life: “What’ve you got in there – a dead body?” Ha. Never heard that one before.
-
Size
Double check that your board will actually fit in your snowboard bag. It’s best not to have too much excess space at the end if you can avoid it; no one likes dragging a floppy bag. The length of our Getaway Bag can be adjusted using a roll-up closure.
The bag’s depth will determine how much extra shit you can pack in. If you’re taking multiple boards then you’ll definitely need something with plenty of volume, but don’t go crazy – just because you can fit the kitchen sink in there and still zip it up, doesn’t mean you’ll make the weight limit of your favorite budget airline. Which brings us to...
-
Weight
While it’s tempting to shell out for a monster case, all that material and any extra bells and whistles can eat into your precious luggage allowance before you’ve even put your first item of kit inside. Look for an efficient design which offers everything you need and nothing you don’t.
-
Fabric
First and foremost your snowboard bag needs to be tough enough to withstand abuse from baggage handlers, coach drivers, kerbs and conveyor belts.
We’ve found many popular wheelie bags split along the bottom seam after a few journeys, exposing the foam padding and even the edge of your board. Our solution is one of two bomb-proof fabrics: heavy duty PVC on the non-wheeled Getaway Bag and an even more durable Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) on the Rollaway Snowboard Bag, a material which bridges the gap between rubber and plastic.
Both these fabrics are also way more waterproof than the Polyester found in your typical board bag – handy when waiting for a transfer in a snowstorm or dragging your belongings down a slushy street. A roll-up closure on the Getaway Bag (similar to the ones you get on wetsuit bags) and a waterproof zipper on the Rollaway further seal them from the elements.
-
Handles & Straps
It’s always useful to have multiple handles on your board bag; aside from hauling it out the door and pulling it around, you might need to grab either end to slide it out of a vehicle. Shoulder straps are also a good way to spread the load - especially on bags without wheels.
-
Inner Organizers
There’s a lot of kit to remember on a snowboard trip. Pockets and liner bags can help you avoid the inside of your board case looking like a yard sale. What was it your mom used to say? A place for everything and everything in its place!
Boot bags are a super good idea, especially on the return leg when they’re still damp and honking from that powder day...
-
ID Pocket
A no-brainer. Should the airline lose your bag or some other shredder in the arrivals hall turns out to have the same taste in luggage, you’ll be stoked you remembered to slip in your deets.
That's all you need to look out for when selecting the right board bag to get your gear safely to the mountain and back, no matter which mode of transport you're taking.
Happy travels!
